[Strict RM1,000 Fine for MCO Violations: No Discounts Even If You Beg for Mercy]

The police announced that violators during the MCO period would be fined RM1,000, and there would be no discounts even if the offenders cried for mercy.

For those of you driving in Malaysia, you might already know that traffic fines usually come with a discount if you pay within the grace period. However, it has been reported that during the MCO (Movement Control Order) period, violators will be hit with strict penalties without any leniency. The fine is 1,000 Ringgit, which is approximately ¥25,000 at the current exchange rate—that’s quite a sting. Everyone in Malaysia, please be careful!

Those who are fined must pay the penalty within two weeks to the Ministry of Health or a similar department, such as Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. According to reports, the fine receipt is not handed out on the spot but rather at the police station. Offenders are initially taken to the police station. It is also said that those who are dissatisfied with the violation can file a lawsuit.

Updates to follow.

Let’s stay calm and fight COVID-19 together. In response to the impact of the novel coronavirus, Malaysia announced an “Movement Control Order” (MCO) from March 18 to March 31, effective as of 10:00 PM on March 16 (11:00 PM Japan Time). In short, this order prohibits entry into the country for foreigners while also restricting Malaysian citizens from leaving the country.
