Kuala Lumpur aims to transform Bukit Bintang into an international shopping district comparable to Tokyo’s Ginza and Singapore’s Orchard Road, as Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced the “I Lite U” project.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and includes upgraded street lighting and the installation of a “Visit Malaysia 2026” monument to create a more vibrant urban space. The federal government and the city will each allocate RM2 million, for a total budget of RM4 million.

The project will officially launch on 3 January 2026 with the closure of major roads in Bukit Bintang, followed by an opening ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and a parade. Minister Nga said the goal is to make the Golden Triangle a district that rivals Ginza and Orchard Road.

City officials said the initiative is expected to enhance urban appeal by improving nighttime safety and boosting the night-time economy. Tourism Malaysia aims to attract 45 million international visitors during Visit Malaysia 2026, and the project is positioned as one of its key supporting initiatives.
