It’s certainly a relief to see the number of infections decline. Yet, it’s undeniable that the mood can feel rather gloomy. If we remain in this state of isolation, what will happen to Malaysia’s economy?

Having implemented measures up to Phase 3, the government noted that the number of cases had dropped into the double digits, claiming that the effectiveness of these measures is becoming apparent. It stated that it will continue to monitor the situation to determine the next steps.

Crowded gatherings, religious activities, sports events, and other activities are suspended. All places of worship and shops are closed. Malaysians are prohibited from leaving the country (returnees must undergo testing and a 14-day quarantine), and foreigners are barred from entering.

Students residing in university/college dormitories and office workers in rural areas have been conditionally permitted to return to urban centers for work, with official directives expected to be announced shortly. Office workers appear to need to register with Gerak Malaysia.

Let’s stay calm and tackle the COVID-19 outbreak together. In response to the impact of the novel coronavirus, Malaysia announced a “Movement Control Order” (MCO) from March 18 to March 31, effective from 10:00 PM on March 16 (11:00 PM Japan Standard Time). In simple terms, this means that entry into the country is prohibited for foreigners, while Malaysians are barred from leaving the country.
